The order
- 20 Boeing 737-10s, a first for the group. The largest variant of the MAX family is not yet certified; in service it will offer more capacity than the group's 737-8s already on order.
- Deliveries from the early 2030s. Part of an ongoing modernization to replace older aircraft with more efficient models.
- From the December 2023 order. These -10s are part of an order Lufthansa placed in December 2023 that included options for 60 MAX aircraft.
- Not yet allocated. A spokesperson confirmed the future deliveries have not been assigned to any of the group's airlines.
The board approved exercising the options on 17 September. Lufthansa Group said the move further strengthens its long-term capacity planning.
Fleet context
At the end of June 2026, per financial filings, Lufthansa Group had 334 A320ceo-family aircraft, down from 344 in the prior-year period. That includes 81 A319s operated by Lufthansa (39), Brussels Airlines (13) and Eurowings (29) — airframes averaging roughly 21 years of age, per Aviation Week's Fleet Discovery database. This is the fleet the new aircraft are aimed at replacing.
Alongside the 737-8s, and the plan to 2035
- 40 Boeing 737-8s on order are already fully allocated to low-cost subsidiary Eurowings, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027.
- More than 250 new aircraft by 2035. Lufthansa Group plans to take delivery of over 250 new aircraft by 2035.
What it means for travellers
Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and others) is one of Europe's largest airline groups, linking Vietnam with Frankfurt and Munich and a wide European network. Renewing the narrowbody fleet with more fuel-efficient models is part of the industry's broader fleet-modernization trend. These are long-term fleet plans and do not change current schedules.
